Payment plans with the biller
Hospitals, utilities, auto shops and many service providers will often set up an installment plan directly if you simply ask — frequently at no additional cost, and faster than most people expect.
Employer pay advances
Some employers offer an advance on earned wages, or a short-term hardship loan, as part of their benefits. It costs nothing to ask your HR department whether this is available.
Community assistance programs
Local nonprofits, religious organizations and community action agencies often provide emergency assistance for rent, utilities or essential repairs — search for programs in your area or ask 211 (a free community referral line in many regions).
Nonprofit credit counseling
A nonprofit credit counselor can review your full financial picture and help negotiate with existing creditors, sometimes reducing what you owe or restructuring payments without new borrowing.
Negotiating directly with a creditor
Many creditors would rather work out a modified payment than have an account go delinquent. A direct call explaining your situation can sometimes result in a reduced payment, waived fee, or temporary pause.
A small emergency fund, going forward
If unplanned expenses come up often, setting aside even a small amount each pay period can gradually reduce how frequently you need to borrow at all.
